Daniel Yoder, Son of Conrad — Expanded Notes
[End of Part 5 - Hickory-Times-Mecury, August 21, 1901]
(sic-Daniel)
David, the fifth son, was born June 18th, 1780, and was a soldier of the
war of 1812. After peace was restored he married Christopher Klein's
daughter, a niece of Conrad Yoder's wife, and settled on the mountain
land near Mountain Grove church, where some of the old apple trees are
yet standing. He sold this farm to his brother-in-law, John Baker, and
went to Indiana about 100 years ago [1800], where his descendants are
now living.

THE MYSTERY OF CONRAD'S SON DANIEL BEGINS TO UNRAVEL
The YNL is glad to announce that, with the help of Hubert A. Yoder of Charlotte,NC,
we have managed to "find" some more members of our family (who never realized
they were lost). As mentioned in previous articles, three sons of Conrad Yoder of NC
moved to southern Indiana in the 1810's.
Son Jacob and his descendants stayed around that spot for some time and are fairly
well documented.
Son Elias (b. 31 Oct.1777) died not long after arriving in the state (estate admin 1817,
Clark Co.,IN) Thanks to Lulu Vaughn of Bunker Hill, IL, the YNL has been able to
share the birth dates of his children (YNL#10, pg 7).
Son Daniel, however, has remained pretty much of a mystery. According to the
Conrad Yoder family Bible, he was born Jun.18, 1780. He appears in the Census for
Indiana over several decades. Up to the 1850 census, only the ages and gender of
household members are shown. No listing of the family members has been found to
date.
Research into records in Indiana and Iowa have recently made it possible to sketch an
outline of Daniel's family. Much remains to be discovered, but facts and speculations
are presented below. Question marks are used when a placement is an educated guess.

By Georgia Collins..
Calvin Yoder was born Sept.22, 1839 in Burnsville, Bartholemew County,
Imdiana. He moved to Iowa and began farming. He joined Company D 3rd
Regiment Calvary Volunteer, February 1864 and was discharged at Atlanta,
Georgia, August 1865.
Calvin married Phoebe Ellen Clark, September 23, 1869 at Bloomfield,
Iowa, by a Justice of the peace. he continued to farm and also worked in the coal
mines in the area. Three sons were born to this union: John H. born in 1870,
marrying Mary F. Cristy. Two children were born to them, but died in infancy.
Charles was born in 1872, marrying Sara A, Robertson, six children were born to them,
2 also dying in infancy. James Francis Arthur (also known as Frank or F.A.) was
born in 1874, marrying Alicie Goodwin. Two children were born to them, the daughter
dying in infancy and a son, Winford, dying in 1920 of an acidental gun-shot wound.
They also adopted two sons, John Stribling and Edward Stattler. Edward took the\
name Yoder. Phoebe died in 1902 in Ottumwa, Iowa, and John died in 1979
in Iowa.
They loved good "horse flesh" and enjoyed good horse racing, both sulky
sury and riding races. The Yoder brothers could never pass up a horse race, participating
in most local, county, and state fair races in Iowa and surrounding states, acting as
their own jockies and wining many races. Their horse handling talents beacme quite
notable in the Newell area. Charles was contracted to race sulkey for Beyer Aune,
Superintendent of the Newell Experiment Farm.
They boys were very talented, they could play most any stringed instrument
by ear. Although John later did have some musical instruction. They entertained for
many family and comunity get-togethers, where dancing was enjoyed by all.
The boys also played baseball with a passion: Frank the pitcher, Charlie at
first base, and John played catcher. They began playing at an early age in Iowa and
continued to play after they came to South Dakota. They played on a Horse Creek team,
a Newell team, and hired out to area teams, such as Rapid City, Lead, and Deadwood.
These boys went to State tournaments in Huron between 1918-1924.
In december of 1908, the three brothers, Jap Riggs, and calvin came to South
Dakota and filed for homestead land on Upper Horse Creek/Dry Creek area. They were
fortunate to obtain land short distances from one another. In February of 1909,
they returned to Iowa to bring their families to the new farms. They sold the least
important belongings, loaded the families, furnishings, livestock, machinery, and
fuel, plus feed and seed, into "immigrant cars" headed for belle Fourche, South
Dakota. the livestock consisted of milk cows, mules, chickens, horses, and hogs.
John Stribling rode with the livestock car as a stow-away, sleeping with the animals
and taking care of them.
They were way-laid a few days in Nebraska by a trecherous snowstorm.
When they reached Rapid City, John was detected in the livestock car; so, they had
to pay .50 for him to ride from Rapid City to Belle Fourche. When they reached
Belle Fourche, they corralled the livestock at Art Adams Livery in the north part
of present town of Belle Fourche. They spent 4-6 months living in tents and doing
odd jobs around town. later the boys got jobs with a crew building Orman Dam,
John as a black smith, Charlie and Frank as teamsters. While working on the
project, they lived in the thriving and busy city of Orman. One incident they
remembered well was while hauling large steel valved from the rail head in
Fruitdale to Orman Dam, with a 16 horse team pulling wagons, a valve fell of the
wagon killing 1 man. This is probably the only fatality recorded while building
the dam. All this time they were working on their homestead claims.
John Stribling (adopted son of F. A.) continued to take care of the
livestock, milking the 6 cows and selling fresh milk for .25 a quart. The families
worked side by side helping each other where ever needed.Frank's and Jap's land
bordered while John's, Calvins's, and Charlie's across section lines. Later they
became "Locators", these were men who helped others find homesteads. And
after they arrived in this area, to help homesteaders freight their families and
livestock and furnishings to their new home. Frank was the locator who took
Matt Hafner, Newell pioneer, to Clark's Road Racnh, north east of Newell
to inspect a claim. He didn't what he saw, there was no water, so he settled
on a claim west and north of Newell near the Experiment Station.
In 1915, Frank relinquished his original homestead and re-filed
a new homestead on 160 acres 3 miles north of the present town of Newell.
The family lived on this place until 1948, wherethey raised chickens, prize
dairy cows, beef cattle, and hogs. The sold eggs and cream to the local creameries,
keeping back enough for family use. In the 1920's Jap and Flloyd Riggs worked
on the roads for Butte County. As with all homesteaders of the day, they raised
large gardens, canning and preserving all they could for a year's supply.
Between 1929-1930, the family came in to a new age, they installed a
wind charged electric plant. Frank also got into the honey business, he had
50 hives and extractor. He sold honey in 5 lb, 10 lb, or 60 lb containers for
.10 per pound. On the dry, he could raise 1 to 3 tons of honey a year. Frank
dug a cistern by hand, so his family had a water supply. He did this at night,
by the light of a lantern, after he had put in a long day in the fields and
feeding the livestock.
The prok was sold to Haust Store in Lead for $5.00 a head. The
seller reserved the heard, heart and liver. On the return trip from Lead, he
hauled pine poles and posts to uses for corrals and fenses. These posts and
poles were free from the C.C.C.'s, when it was first formed. They discovered
pine was not good for fenses or corrals, for they rotted easily and lasted only
about 2 years. Some of the early Horse Creek neighbors were: Conways,
George & Fred Winkler (brothers), Hugo Reiche, the :ennia Lahonan family,
Lees, Henry Schipke, and Paul & William Schmeie (brothers). John's and
Calvin's homesteads are now part of the Winkler ranch.
Charlie and Sarah had 3 children before they came to South
Dakota. Earl, Aaron, and Violet while Ellen was born to them on the Horse
Creek Hometead in 1909-1911. Earl married Edith and had 2 daughters.
Aaron died in 1924 in a railroad accident while "folowing the rails" as
folks did at that time. Violet had 6 children including a set of twins who
died shortly after birth. Two sons, Edwin and James are both deceased.
Two girls: Velma died JAn. 1998 and Violet who lives in Butte, Montana.
Jasper and Lill Riggs had 3 sons, all deceased. Floyd married
Inez Doody who had 1 son, Vincent living in Kansas. Vinton has 3 children:
Russell born in 1906 and died 1908 before they came to the South Dakota
homestead. John married Ethel Heston, they had 2 children: 1 daughter and
1 son. Lill had a daughter, Ethel, by a previous marriage. She is now
deceased but had 4 sons, but no information is available on them. (Lill and
Alice were sisters.
John S. served in the NAvy in WW1, after which he returned to Iowa,
where he worked for the Morre;; Meat Packing Co., from which he retired.
He marrued Ivy Goody. They had 2 sons, who are now deceased.
Edward married Velma Holtry. Three children were born to this
union: Dale in Fairbanks, Alsaka, who has 1 son and 1 daughter; Paul in
Wassila Alaska, who has 1 son and 2 daughters; and Georgia (married to
Gene Collins) at Newell, they have 4 sons and 4 daughters. She is the only
family member living in this area. Fiver generations in all.
Edward farmed on the hometead and drove a school bus until
1949. He was paid a monthly salary by the Newell School District, but he
had to furnish his own vehicle and gas. In the early 1950's, he, Chris Arpan,
and Albert Cram built and operated a livestock Sale Barn south east of
Newell not far from the rail head. Edwards also operated a filling station for
a short time in Newell, managed a bar in Ft. Pierce briefly, then worked in
the oil fields in Wyoming before moving to Alaska where he worked
construction in the Artic region. He returned to South Dakota where he accepted
a Policeman position at Eagle Butte and later policed in Newell until
retirement. He was an avid rattlesnake hunter for many years, supplying
snakes for the Reptile Gardens in Rapid City. He rid the prairie of approximately
ten thousand of this reptile, making life safer for man and beast.

(From Joy Stone-Jun 2000- This information is from my grandfather,
who wrote this down in a family book in the 1940’s. I can not say
whether he was a reliable source or not, but I have found that
throughout his book some of the details are not correct,
but here is what he has:
Con82 George William Yother, Sr. of Union county Georgia was born
May 9, 1809 and died May 6, 1866. He married Elizabeth Abercrumbie in
1833. (Your notes indicate he may have fought in the Civil War. I found a
George Yother listed in the union in the 6th Tennessee Mounted Infantry,
Co. A and I found a George Yother listed in the confederate army with
the 38th NC Infantry, Co. F, I don’t know if either one is who we are
looking for.) Elizabeth Abercrumbie was born April 14, 1817 and
died Dec 24, 1880.
Con821 - Wilson Yother born Jan 18, 1835
Con822 - John J. Yother born Feb 12, 1837. Died 1864
The family book says "John fought in the Civil War. At the age of 27
He was missing in action, he was killed in 1864 in the Rossville Gap where
now stands the Iowa Monument. His entire company went to General
Thomas at Chickamauga after a hard fight against Gen. Bragg’s Army on
Missionary Ridge in Chattanooga." (My grandfather indicates in his notes
that John fought for the union but so far I have not been able to locate a
John Yother fighting for the union. I have only looked in the southern
states though. I did find three John Yothers listed as fighting for the
Confederate side. {10th Missouri Infantry, Co. F/ 19th Tennessee Infantry
Co. F/ and the Cherokee Legion Infantry, State Guard, Co. D} I checked the
roster for the Cherokee Legion Guard and found two Yother’s but they were
the wrong age and I have not discovered rosters for the other units yet.)
Con823 - Mariah Jane Yother was born Dec 6, 1839, died July 18, 1887.
She married Robert Jackson July 10, 1856. Robert died July 28, 1856.
In 1858 Mariah married Isaac Reed. Isaac was born May 9, 1837, died
Oct 6, 1875. They had one daughter, Lizzie Jane Reed (my grandfather's
mother) who was born Jan 23, 1868. in 1877 Mariah married James
Futerel.
Con824 - James Fate Yother was born 1842. He left home and went
west.
(?Yother James D died 06/02/1862 Pvt Co C 5 Tenn Inf 6 2 1862 Bur
Barboursville Ky Plot: F )
Con825 - Adam David Yother was born June 15, 1848
Con826 - George W. Yother, Jr. was born Nov 12, 1849 and died 1914.
He married Bell Clemons in 1880 and they had no children.
Con827 - Sarah Ann Yother was born Feb 28, 1852 and she died 1918.
She married Jess Brown in 1872. Jess was born in 1853 and died in 1907.
They had 5 sons and 2 daughters.
Con828 - (Not mentioned in my grandfather’s record)
Con829 - Mary Yother was born Jan 9, 1861. She married Joe Stringer
in 1885. Joe was born in 1860. They had 3 sons and 2 daughters.
That is all the information in my grandfather’s record book, I’m sorry
there is not more but hopefully this helps to fill in a few little gaps. Like
I said, I’m not sure how accurate the information is but at least it’s a
starting point. Thanks again for the Yoder web site, it’s really wonderful.

(?my grgr-grandmother Melissa Ellen "Mila" Yoder. We
believe she was born in Ga. and possibly married there to Levi
Harvey Carroll. They settled in Bradley County Tn. before moving
to Robertson County Tn. abt 1870. Their first child was named
Amanda Elizabeth who was my gr-grandmother. Birthdate of June 7, 1841-42,
death certificate gives that she was born in Ga. and on one of her daughters
death certificate it gives the spelling Yother....I also noticed that one of her
sisters according to the YNL married a Tallent, the Tallents were also in
Bradley Co. Tn. where Mila and Levi were in 1860. Levi was married twice,
Mila being his second wife. He had two children by the first wife believed to be a
Cooper as there is a Tabitha Cooper living with Levi and Mila in 1860
and who also raised Levi's daughter Sarah by his first wife. On the 1860
Bradley Co. census Mila is listed as being 18 yrs old."-Edna Cooksey.'97
