("my great great grandfather, John Yoder. He was born in
Hooversville,

Somerset County, Pennsylvania on April 29, 1845. He served with
Company

I, 1st Maryland (US) Volunteer Cavalry during the Civil War after
enlisting

at age 16. He was injured when his horse stumbled while jumping
a wall.

His unit fought at the East Cavalry Battlefield at the Battle
of Gettysburg.

He was mustered out of service and honorably discharged in 1865.
He

married Malinda Lohr (born December 18, 1845 in Buckstown, Somerset

County, Pennsylvania) in October 1865, and they are the parents
of 9

children, including my great grandfather, Edward Augustus Yoder

(born February 12, 1882 in Somerset County). John died of his
war

wounds on November 4, 1904, and lies buried in Otterbein United

Brethren Church Cemetery, Shade Township, Somerset County.

"I can't really add too much information to what you already
have, but I can

tell you that Edward Augustus Yoder married Elizabeth Watkins
(born July 28,

1883 in New Straitsville Ohio, the daughter of Welsh immigrant
David Watkins

and Rebecca Green). Edward was a stone mason by trade, and much
of his work

in Cambria County, Pennsylvania still exists. My grandmother knows
where all

of it is. Edward and Elizabeth lived out their married lives in
Cambria

County, and they are the parents of Marie, born 1909, died 1980;
Lester, born

1912, died 1960's; Minnie, born 1915, died 1985; and my grandmother,

Florence, born 1918 and still living in Johnstown, Cambria County.
Florence

married James Orner on April 11, 1942, and they are the parents
of Sharon

Fay, born August 21, 1943, and my father, Barry James, born August
19, 1946.

Barry married my mother, Karen Ann Mikas (born July 2, 1947) on
September 30,

1967, and I am their only daughter Debra, born February 22, 1969.

"Interesting story regarding John and Malinda Yoder--I
have no idea if this is

true, it's just family legend--but supposedly John was not a very
nice person

when he came back from the war, having taken up drinking and occasional

wife-beating. As the story goes, one day Malinda decided she had
had enough

and, pointing at the leg he was about to kick her with, said something
in

German and the leg was crippled from that day on. Like I said,
interesting

story, absolutely no proof to back it up. I do know from his pension
records

that John's injuries were internal, so that's not what was wrong
with the

"My great-uncle, Frank YODER (YR237817), born January 1888
in Hooversville,

Somerset County, Pennsylvania, brother to my great-grandfather,
Edward

Augustus YODER and son of John YODER and Malinda LOHR, was a prisoner
of war

during WWI, captured by the Germans.

"My grandparents are moving out of their house and are going
through a lot of

old things. She found a picture of Frank and some other prisoners,
along

with what I assume are some of their captors, because they look
to be Turks.

Unfortunately, that's all she knows. She doesn't know what his
unit was,

where he was captured, what he was doing when he was captured,
or how long he

was held. I intend to send away for his records, and when I receive
them I

will pass along the details to the list.

"From what I can tell in the picture, Frank was very well
dressed and well

fed, so the picture was taken either near the beginning of the
war or he was

made to look well taken care of for propaganda purposes. I am
happy to

report he was also very handsome!"
