Descriptions:
Event #1: Berks County Amish Yoder Tour, Friday July 20, leaving from The Inn at Reading at 9:00 AM. Many Amish families settled in beautiful Berks Co., Pa., in the 1700s. A chartered bus tour will take us through the Maiden Creek and Northkill areas of Berks County, where we will see the backcountry roads where the Yoder, Beiler, Hertzler, Hochstetler, Kurtz, Lapp, Mast, Miller, Smucker, Stoltzfus, and Zug families lived. The tour price includes a box lunch and ends with a delicious homemade dinner in a private Amish home.
Event #2: Welcome Party & Get-Together, Friday, July 20 at the Inn at Reading after 7 PM. Renew ties with old friends and make new ones. This get together will give you a chance to learn about the heritage of the Yoders in Pennsylvania and whatever other information you are willing to share. **Please bring whatever items you would like to share with your Yoder relatives, we will provide the display tables.**
Event #3: Breakfast, Saturday July 21 at Oley Fire Hall. The breakfast will be buffet style, serving from 8 to 9:00, including all the usual breakfast delights and some special ones as well!
Event #4: Oley Valley Bus Tour, Saturday July 21, leaving from Oley Fire Hall at 9:30. The tour will include lunch and some of the stops will include: The Hans Homestead and the Yost Homestead. The two brothers Hans and Yost settled in the Oley Valley and the tour will visit both sites. The Hans property is still owned by a Yoder. The Yost property includes one of the old buildings with a huge 12¢ fireplace and we will hear an interesting ghost story told about Yost. Pleasantville Cemetery, which bordered both properties, will be included. It contains what is thought to be the oldest Yoder tombstone in the U.S. This cemetery is being repaired and restored by the Oley Yoder Heritage Association. The tour will also visit Lobachsville Mill where the owner will demonstrate how it operates. The Keim Homestead, which is on the National Register, will be a stop with its huge and impressive old cider press. A Revolutionary Militia Encampment will be provided especially for our tour. There will be reinactors from the Tulpehocken Associators, Inc. (a non-profit, educational and volunteer organization). Information will be available on known persons with the surname of Yoder who served in the German Regiment and in the Militia during the Revolutionary War. If you have any information of ancestors serving in either regular or militia capacity, please bring that information.
Event #5: Banquet, Saturday July 21, at the Inn at Reading. The final event of the reunion will include a display of Yoder artifacts and memorabilia. **Please bring whatever items you would like to share with your Yoder relatives, we will provide the display tables.** There will also be an "all you can eat" Pennsylvania Dutch Buffet and entertainment will be provided by German Dancers, The G.T. V. Edelweiss Schuplatters. There will also be time to meet and share stories with other attendees.
Item #9: The all cotton throw is an exclusive design depicting historical sites in the Oley Valley region that was settled by our Yoder ancestors. (Wait till you see this one!)
Just a note of interest: The cookbooks are sold out and we are getting ready for the sequel. **If you have a recipe that you would like to contribute, please send it in or bring it along to the reunion. ** If you have any old family recipes, handed down through the years, it would be especially nice to include them.
We wish to thank all of you who supported the Association by purchasing our cookbooks and other items. All proceeds from those sales go to the restoration and upkeep of the Pleasantville Cemetery. If you would like to help in that effort a contribution would be gratefully accepted.
